Artist Statement

My art practice explores contemporary dance. I am particularly interested in the ephemeral, corporeal, precarious and performative characteristics of contemporary dance. I am particularly drawn to surreal, weird and eerie dance themes.

For current dance works I photograph rehearsals, capturing fleeting vital shapes and gestures, narrative and movement progression.

I am also interested in responding to past dance masterpieces no longer in production. I investigate archive sources to identify source imagery for use as a starting point for my artwork.

I am beginning to work directly and collaboratively with dancers to gain greater agency over dance movement that I wish to explore.

My two-dimensional artwork ranges across digital and analogue photography, paintings, drawings and printmaking. Scale varies from A5 to large scale projections.

My current focus is the exploration of a large archive of analogue photographs of dance rehearsals I took several decades ago, that have sat dormant. They are fragments of things past and a link across time between the dancers and the viewer.

It also offers the opportunity to compare and contrast this work to my more recent digital dance photography to reveal their respective attributes regarding capturing the essence of dance performances.
