Rehearsals - London Contemporary Dance Theatre
The London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT) was a contemporary dance company, based at The Place, founded in 1967 by Robin Howard with Robert Cohen as its Artistic Director. It was a pathfinder for the art form in the UK. The company closed in 1994. London Contemporary Dance School was originally conceived to train dancers for the company, and is still in operation as part of The Place.
The LCDT archive is held by the V&A Museum. Other material is held by the choreographers (or their estate) who were employed by or were commissioned by LCDT. I am presently researching the material held by these various sources and exploring the possibility of using some of the photographic material for my art practice.
In 1987, LCDT invited me to photograph three rehearsals that together comprised ten dances, at Sadlers Wells.
I shot the rehearsals on B&W film. More recently, I scanned the negatives to allow digital photo editing. The sample images below used a range of digital photo editing processes to create a more surreal tone to more closely reflect the reaction I had to the performances and make a more immersive experience for the viewer.
